A couple weeks ago, due to the craziness of the Thick As Thieves video, we decided to put our newest record Anchors up for free download on our website, and it was probably the best thing we’ve ever done as a band.

There was no way for Anchors to ever reach the amount of people the video reached, so our hope was that if people liked the video they would also like our record, they could download it, and hopefully become a fan of the band. A few weeks later and now we can say that the plan has really worked. Anchors has reached far more people than we ever thought possible, and for that we are extremely grateful.

Now, we are in the midst of finishing up a new release for 2012 and we’ve come to the same conclusion, that we would rather have people listen to our music than pay for it.

So as of now we are putting all three of our releases for free download at http://soundcloud.com/kalle-mattson and for Pay What You Want at http://kallemattson.bandcamp.com/ . You can still order physical CD’s (and soon to be LP’s!) from Bandcamp and at shows, or use iTunes if that’s your thing. But, we just want you to know you can test the waters before you jump in.

Kalle Mattson to Re- release “Anchors” and 7” on Parliament of Trees- November 8th.

Ottawa folk rock quintet Kalle Mattson prepare to re-release their second full length album “Anchors” on Parliament of Trees Records Tuesday November 8th, 2011. The album, mixed by Howie Beck (Feist, Jason Collett, Hayden, Josh Rouse, etc) and mastered in Los Angeles by the legendary Bernie Grundman Studios (Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, U2, The Band, Van Morrison, etc) was originally self released earlier in the year, which grabbed the attention of Winnipeg label Parliament of Trees. To download the record, and for added information, please go to wwww.parliamentoftrees.com

The Shore/ Palm Sunday 7” was self produced by the band, and recorded in Sault Ste. Marie and Ottawa over the summer of 2011. The 7” will be available digitally with the purchase of the CD of Anchors immediately, and as physical copy in January.

Kalle Mattson has shared the stage with the likes of Josh Ritter, The Wooden Sky, Great Bloomers, You Say Party!, The Deep Dark Woods, Fred Eaglesmith, Cuff The Duke, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Elliott Brood, Cowboy Junkies, Blue Rodeo, and will be touring throughout Ontario and Quebec with Parliament of Trees label mates The Details in November.

Kalle Mattson November Tour Dates (all dates with The Details)
November 17th- Sault Ste Marie ON @ Loplops
November 18th- North Bay ON @ Opera Bakery Cafe
November 19th- Sarnia ON @ Paddy Flaherty’s
November 20th- Windsor ON @ Villains
November 21st- Toronto ON @ The Boat
November 22nd- Montreal QC @ L’Escogriffe
November 26th- Ottawa ON @ Zaphods

In the three short years since Kalle Wainio began writing songs under the pseudonym ‘Kalle Mattson’, the band has grown from a Dylan-influenced solo act into a full-on experimental folk-rock quartet. During the summer of 2008, the band released their self-produced debut EP, Telescope. In early 2009 the band released ‘Whisper Bee,’ an album that has garnered praise from both Canadian and British music press, earned the band two Northern Ontario Music Award nominations and placement in the Top 100 of the Billboard World Song Contest

“Kalle Wainio seems to be wise beyond his years musically and emotionally. (He) and his band – Kalle Mattson – show more potential than any young band I’ve come across lately.” – Herohill

“Like Wilco colliding with a sunny day, Kalle Mattson injects indie-rock with elements off-kilter folk and rootsy accents. Ringing guitars, Jeff Tweedy-style vocals, and exhibiting rock finesse to counterbalance their youngish appearance. This four-piece is a triumph of radiant energy. They definitely have their hearts in the right place.” – The Lonely Vagabond

Hey all,

Kalle Mattson as a band started roughly two and a half years ago now, and maybe reflection only comes with change but in this time of reflection I am pretty convinced that these past few years have been the best of my life so far. Not many people fully understand what it’s like to be in a band I don’t think. There is a true brotherhood and friendship that goes much deeper than just “four dudes in a van” or “playing music with your friends”. It becomes a bond.

Over these next few months though, a number of things within Kalle Mattson will change. This upcoming fall the band will be making it’s full-time move to Ottawa, though we’re certainly not severing our ties with Sault Ste. Marie, just making the distinction between our “hometown” and our “home”.

The other major change comes with our drummer, Jimmie Chiverelli, leaving the band after this summer. This past May, Jimmie and his girlfriend Julie got engaged and bought their first home in Sault Ste. Marie. Julie has become a really good friend and part of Kalle Mattson in her own right and we wish them only the best! But the reality is that our lives are beginning to move in far different directions, and we simply both came to this realization.

Jimmie’s influence over my music and the progression of the band has been immense. He booked our first tour, effectively created our Sault Ste. Marie fan base, introduced me to Bruce Springsteen and over the past few years has become one of my best friends. When talking to Jimmie about his leaving the band I think we’re both able to take some solace in knowing that he was able to accomplish everything he wanted to with us. We toured Canada, played festivals, played a hockey arena, made a record, and for me I can’t really picture these past few years without Jimmie, and I know for a fact that we would not be where we are now without him.

With Jimmie departing though we now welcome Kyle Woods to the band. Kyle is a good friend of ours and also plays in a great Ottawa area band called Life In 2D, and we really couldn’t be happier that such a great drummer and solid guy will be joining us. Moving forward we have lots of exciting stuff happening this fall as we continue to promote Anchors and I have already written a good chunk of our next record! We’ll also have some big news regarding a new release in the new year!

So! Jimmie’s last few shows with us will be spread out over the summer starting with our two NXNE showcases and then Ottawa Bluesfest on July 10th and an early August tour.

For Sault Ste. Marie folks there will be two final shows with Jimmie. Sunday August 7th at Loplops (info on that to come) and Rotaryfest Second Stage which takes place on July 15th and 16th! We really hope to see you out and to make these shows a joyous occasion!

We will be saying goodbye to one aspect of our friendship together but BROS FOR LIFE. Thanks for everything Jimmie!

- Kalle.
